Yarn bombing: brings everyday drab surroundings to life
By Lacey Ackerman
Some graffiti artists like spray paint as a medium, others choose yarn. It costs next to nothing and it's removable! This type of art is called yarn bombing. Artists wrap colorful yarn around street posts, trees, telephone poles, benches and more. What's in it for them? I'm actually a little bit stumped on that one...I guess one could just call it a leisure hobby; just another artist trying to express themselves. Yarn bombing was first popular in Canada and a few other countries around the world. The US has recently seen an uprise of this art form within the last year or so. There's many "bombers" throughout the country, including Magda Sayeg, who is part of the yarn bombing group called Knitta. She lives in Austin, Texas and has made this hobby her full-time job, which has led to her own galleries in Rome, London and Bali. When asked why, bombers usually have the same response: they like to make ugly things pretty.
