The Underbelly Project - NY's biggest secret
By Lacey Ackerman
Four stories under the streets of New York you'll find abandoned subway stations, which has remained untouched for 100 years...that is, until The Underbelly Project was developed in 2009. That year, artists have been successfully (and illegally) escorted through a secret entrance. Each artist would be directed to spend all night painting anything they desired on the subway walls.
The station has since been transformed into a display full of creativity. Today, unless you are an employee of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, your chances of seeing this site are slim to none. The "secret" entrance has been blocked off and the artists, as well as the creator, lack access to the site. No photos or knowledge of the location has been known to anyone until street artists themselves, revealed the project for a single night to a New York Times reporter on a two-and-a-half hour tour. But this was only under one condition...as long as no details of the site location would be leaked.
The New York Transit has described the project as "trespassing, punishable by law" and believes anyone violating this law should be subject to arrest and fined. Illegal or not, the site is beautiful, full of color and creativity. And who knows, maybe another hundred years down the line, this could serve as a public art exhibit. Below are some photos of the graffiti...to view more click here.
