Clean Design + Simple Recipe = Yummy

By: Elaine Levins
While perusing the ice cream at our local Shop Rite, my husband came upon a new ice cream category from Haagen Dazs. Named "five" because it contains only five ingredients, we were at first drawn to its simple, clean packaging.

So we decided to try two of the flavors offered, Mint and Vanilla. Both were so good! And there really are only 5 ingredients listed for each flavor... and the ingredients are as simple as: Skim Milk, Cream, Sugar, Egg Yolks, Mint Extract. That's it. And the best part is that these flavors are actually lower in calories and fat than their classic counterparts.

So needless to say, I'm a big fan of Haagen Dazs "five." First, I think they did a great job with the packaging: they kept the important Haagen Dazs brand elements, while still distinguishing this product as a unique offering within the brand. And the simplicity of the packaging only serves to reinforce the simplicity of the product itself.

Second, I think all of us want to be more "natural" and healthy when it comes to the food we eat. While I realize that ice cream is not the most nutritious food, it makes me feel better to know that, even though I'm having a "treat," I am not ingesting a bunch of chemicals or artificial flavors. If I'm going to snack, it might as well be "real food."

But, take heart... there are still plenty of options out there for those of you who crave sodium alginate and guar gum :-)
