Did they do the old spice commercial in one shot?

By: Casey Knox
One commercial which has recently tickled my funny bone is the Old Spice commercial called "The Man your Man could Smell like". If you haven't seen it, it's a good one. View it first here.

Around the office, we were talking about it and one coworker commented that it was all done in one shot. Thinking that was impressive, but not one to take anyone at their word, I researched and found an interview given by the creators of this commercial which confirms they indeed did this in one take. Not only that, but none of the commercial had CG in it, nor blue screen. The only bit of trickery turns out to be the diamonds, which were a separate shot - with a machine pumping diamonds out of a fake hand, which they then superimposed onto the real shot. That's a real ocean behind him... not a blue screen; and they built a special machine that would dump the actor onto the horse for the ending punchline shot. Very impressive. But when asked if the creators thought about how all this would be accomplished, they responded that they try not to think about how, and just try and come up with good ideas first. If only more companies would allow that sort of latitude, creative jobs like mine might be more satisfying.

Below is the interview I found...enjoy.
