I Went Grocery Shopping Today... At Target!

By: Elaine Levins

I love shopping at Target. So much so that my husband and I joke that we can't get out of the store for less than $70.

Well, today we found yet another reason to love Target - grocery shopping! I had noticed the last few times I had shopped at "my" Target, that they had done quite a bit of remodeling/reorganizing: many departments had moved, and things just generally seemed to be organized differently. I have been shopping at this store for a while, and at first, I couldn't understand why they were making all these changes.

Turns out that, earlier this year, Target made the decision to offer more fresh foods in 100 of its stores. After a successful test market in its home state of Minnesota, it was determined that offering more food/grocery items could boost store sales. It makes sense: Especially with the Christmas shopping season coming up, I would be willing to bet that a lot of people will pick up some of their groceries at Target, while they are doing their other shopping.

And from what I saw today, their prices and quality are good. They had watermelon (which my local supermarket has not had for several weeks), some ice cream brands and flavors that my market doesn't carry, plus I was able to pick up just a few things without having to make another stop on my way home.

And their strategy seems to be working (if I'm any indication): what is normally a $70 shopping trip added up to $90+ today, thanks to the extra groceries we picked up. Nice job, Target: Well Played!
