Happy Birthday, Ipo and Stinky!

By: Elaine Levins
It was four years ago today that these two rotund, funny furballs came into our lives and office, and jldcreative has never been quite the same.

When we rescued Miss B in May of 2005, we were helping out a sick cat: we kept her at the office while we nursed her back to health, all the while planning to find a new home for her once she was feeling better. Before long, we discovered she was pregnant, and a short time later, we had kittens! We subsequently fell in love with mom and her babies, and decided they should all live here and become honorary jld employees. We named them Ipo and Aloha (both after my love of Hawaii) - Aloha soon became "Stinky" and the rest is history.

It's been a lot of fun having them here. Twice, while I have been talking on the phone, Stinky has jumped on my desk and, with a great deal of purpose, hung up the phone. We're not talking about "accidentally" walking over the disconnect button: on both occasions, he actually sat down on my desk, reached out with his paw, and hit the disconnect button. (The first time he did it, I think I laughed uncontrollably for at least 5 minutes.) He's also a connoisseur of iPod earbuds and pencils.

And then there's Ipo. Ipo likes to walk over my keyboard and press a lot of buttons all at the same time, which tends to do funky things to my screen. But I have to give him credit: with only one exception, he has always managed to "undo" his actions on the return trip. Ipo is the only cat I've ever seen that likes scrambled eggs and popcorn.

Miss B is a character too, although she is still a little unsure of us, so she mostly keeps her distance. One of her happiest days was when we fed her left-over Easter ham (yes, we know that pork products are not good for cats... we kept it to a minimum.)

Mental Floss  has recently had stories about library cats and bookstore cats, which makes me think that our situation is not as unique as I originally thought.

All in all, the cats have definitely made the office a lot more fun. And their four years here have flown by. Check out some pictures of them through the years.
