Google's Chrome Frame Plug-in For Internet Explorer – Conquering From Within

By: William Levins
An interesting approach to speeding along the much-needed death of IE6 (and later versions.) Google's developing a "plug-in" that basically runs Chrome within IE inside a frame: Google Chrome Frame Plug-in.

This is one possible way to finally put a stake in the heart of Internet Explorer.

When I first read this, I couldn't help but think of the scene in the first Alien movie – when the alien bursts from the crew member's chest. Makes me chuckle to think just how much Google must despise IE to spend time doing this. It's certainly a novel idea and one that, if successful (it's currently in Beta), will rapidly gain acceptance and advocacy among web designers and developers. Imagine, instead of wasting hours or days on debugging or crippling sites so they run under IE, one could simply instruct visitors to install a browser plug-in...and voila!

If it works as described, it'll be terrific...provided it doesn't slow things down significantly – after all, you are essentially running two browsers. Though, with faster javascript, better resource allocation, even running Chrome inside of Internet Explorer will probably be faster than IE itself....how funny is that?

So kudos to Google's programmers. Here's hoping the plug-in is successful and catches on. And that everyone stuck using IE6, IE7 and even IE8 chooses to install the Google Chrome Frame plug-in so they can finally start using the web standards of today – and so can developers.
