Eli, No!, Great Design, Great Children's Story
By: Christina Smith
“Fine Arts?! What are you going to do with that when you graduate?!” Up until I changed my major to graphic design my sophomore year in college, I’d hear this comment from my father almost every single day. He had a point. Other then getting my masters in Education or another art related field, I’m not sure what I would have done with my very expensive Fine Arts degree. However, even though I’m a full-time graphic designer, I still like to grab an untouched white sketchpad and illustrate. Finding the time to do so is always a challenge, but that’s an entirely different story. The other day as I was surfing my favorite design sites, I found a very nice, simply designed children’s book called “Eli, no!” illustrated by Katie Kirk & Nathan Strandberg. Below are a few images from the book. The bright colors and strong, bold typography moves the reader’s eye through each page quickly and seamlessly. The simple, flat, geometric theme is kept throughout the book creating a dynamic, creative design piece. In addition to the flawless graphics, the copy is interesting and creative and would most definitely keep children engaged in the storyline. Unfortunately, I don’t think this book has been published, as of yet, however, it should be! If it does make it to bookshelves, it will definitely become a quick favorite of both parents and children alike.
