WPA 2.0 is a competition sponsored by UCLA Architecture and cityLAB, a group formed to research and explore possible solutions to improve urban living and sustainability. The goal of the competition was to explore new ways to improve the environment and better the future of our country. The winner of the competition was an ingenious plan designed by architects from Port Architecture + Urbanism based in Chicago and New York. The proposal, entitled "Carbon T.A.P.// Tunnel Algae Park", uses “algae pontoon parks to link Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Governors Island. The main goal of the algae pontoons is to capture harmful carbon emissions from the city. In addition, the parks provide a place for play and recreation. It “not only captures the CO2 from the underwater auto tunnel, encouraging photosynthesis and alternative fuel production using algae pontoons, but also creates new public spaces (swimming pools, boardwalks, and plazas) and new locations for ecological or agricultural development including controlled wetlands and fish habitats.” Check out the pictures of the proposal below or read the rest of the article here.
