Take a Hike! (or just a walk)

By Elaine Levins
I love to explore. Whether I'm checking out local parks, or walking around the Island of Maui, I always enjoy walking around.

In fact, I find that most of my vacations are spent walking/hiking. Sure, I always pack cute clothes and great shoes, but I end up spending a majority of my time in shorts, t-shirts & sneakers.

I've never been an athlete - I'm pretty uncoordinated (a kinder way of saying "klutzy"). And I doubt anyone who knows or sees me would describe me as a "fitness freak." But I have found, especially recently, that I really enjoy walking. I love being outside, and this summer my husband and I have found a lot of parks that we never visited before. Some we never even knew existed.

In addition to the enjoyment of being outside, I just feel better. And walking is an easy, free way to get some exercise. And studies show that walking just 30 minutes a day (I usually get in several hours a day on a Saturday or Sunday if the weather is nice) can really improve your health: it can help regulate blood pressure, raise good cholesterol, lower stress, relieve pain, boost your mood, and help prevent diseases such as osteoporosis. Plus, it can help you control your weight.

And walking doesn't have to be boring or tedious. Yes, I walk around my neighborhood quite a bit, but I try to take different routes. And when I get the chance, I look to explore areas where I've never been.

The benefits of going for a walk are many, so get out and explore!

I love walking too and I've found that it's much easier on my body than say running. I tried that...it didn't work out.
