Pantone's Color of the Year Reflects (and influences) Trends

By Elaine Levins

Since 1963, Pantone has been developing its "color match" system, a system that is used by designers and artisans in all fields, from fashion and jewelry design to graphic and web design, to assure that the chosen color will be "true" as it enters the production stage - regardless of the equipment used to produce the finished product.

The Pantone Color Institute® researches and forecasts color trends, and has, since 2007, been designating one specific hue as "color of the year." And this selection influences more than most of us realize.

The 2010 Color of the Year, Pantone 15-5519 Turquoise, was selected as a result of much research into the psychology of consumers, as well as current trends of top fashion designers. The color, which brings to mind tranquil seas, and playful southwestern jewelry, is seen as a "splashy" color that is universally flattering, is complementary to many other colors, and has broad appeal to both men and women.

I like to shop, and I often watch QVC. Recently, they have mentioned numerous times, while selling their fashions and jewelry, that turquoise is the "hot trend" and has been named the Color of the Year: letting people know what they will be seeing on the runway, and in the stores. Personally, I am a fan of turquoise. While not big on southwestern jewelry per se, I do find the turquoise stone to be beautiful and fun. And you have to admit that the color is flattering and lively - just the right mix to bring us out of the doldrums of the past year and into a bright future.
