I've Grown Bored with the Internet

By Elaine Levins
Don't get me wrong...I can't imagine life without the internet. I use it at home and at work, for both research and entertainment. But lately, I've become disenchanted.

I still get 90% of my news from the internet, and it's an absolute necessity for work. But recently I've found that little else online is holding my interest. There are certain sites I visit once or twice a day (mainly news sites to keep up-to-date), but even some of these sites have gotten really stale. Yes, the internet can be great when you're looking for specific information, but I'm really having difficulty finding new sites to pique my interest.

Even one of my standards, aggregating site reddit.com, has become a bit of a yawn. I could always rely on Reddit to point me in the direction of interesting stories I may not have otherwise come across. Recently, though, the site has become a little "self-serving" with a lot of personal thoughts or questions from its users. And news sites are often just as bad: when a celebrity gets married, there are 2-3 entries on CNN's home page, but the G-20 Summit got shortchanged.

I suppose it's not just the internet, but rather an overall media trend. It's disappointing that, in an age where our society is so uninformed/underinformed about what's going on in the world, major news outlets can spend so much time reporting on celebrity deaths and weddings, and so little time educating the public about world affairs. OK... I've gotten a little off-topic.

I suppose I had gotten too reliant on the internet for information, education and entertainment. It's not like I'm planning on abandoning the internet entirely, but I think maybe it's time to find some new "go-to" sites. If anyone out there has any ideas, please share.
