NY not so loko about Four Loko

By Lacey Ackerman
Four Loko banned

It was only months ago when I noticed all the hype about an alcoholic energy drink called Four Loko. Since, I have seen people get obligerated as they consumed this drink, which is equal to a six-pack of beer and five cups of coffee in a 23.5-ounce can. Red Bull contains about 80 milligrams of caffeine. A cup of coffee is about 100. A can of Monster has about 160 milligrams. Four Loko just happens to leave that info off the can, however, it's been estimated at about 500 milligrams per can.

Yes, I've seen the Four Loko experience live and in action and I immediately knew this product could not last on shelves for much longer. Especially since most of the consumers tend to be younger and parents have been unaware of the danger - mostly because the packaging appears similar to any other non-alcoholic energy drink. I won't go into depth, but like expected, if you look in recent news there have been countless hospitalizations and unfortunately, some deaths.

Phusion Projects, the company responsible for the drink, announced they will be removing caffeine and other sources of the stimulant from all of its products. Meanwhile, the drink has been banned in New York and Michigan. New York State Senator Charles Schumer wanted the ban not only on Four Loko, but all caffeinated alcoholic drinks. He described them as "a toxic and dangerous brew" that needed the be taken off the market.

Turns out my ban premonition on Four Loko was spot on.

I don´t understand the problem. The Irish have been drinking Irish coffee for centuries...alcohol makes you sleeping, coffee wakes you up. Why not put them together. Instead of banning drinks....educate the drinkers...
