Ding Dong, IE6 is Dead!

By William Levins
Google is officially ending support for IE6 in many of its web apps, starting March 1, 2010. They're not the first to do so and hopefully won't be the last. Hallelujah!

google ends support for IE6

Other companies and websites have phased out support for Internet Explorer 6 too!

The end of IE6 is long overdue. And I for one, as well as many other web developers, will not be sad to see it die. Here's a short list of sites that are phasing out or have phased out IE6 support.
  • Google!!!
  • YouTube (which is also google)
  • Facebook
  • 37signals
  • Apple's Mobileme
  • Digg
Even Microsoft is finally ready to end support for Internet Explorer 6. In fact, various versions of IE6 have already reached End of Life (EOL) status - with the final support ending for all versions coming in July, 2010.
